Community

WE DANCE.
WE CONNECT.

Playtime is a community built around traditional bachata. From weekly classes to socials. We create a playground where every dancer feels at home. Rhythm is our language. At Playtime, traditionality and connection come first. We care less about choreography or perfect technique, and more about how you connect: with yourself, with the music, and with your dance partner. From that foundation, we help you develop your own style and expression on the dance floor.

Carla Jimenez Estevez and Ninjo Andelloe — founders of Playtime Bachata Amsterdam

Carla Jimenez Estevez

FOUNDER · TEACHER

Dominican roots. Culture driven. As a qualified dance teacher, Carla shares the rhythm, footwork and soul of traditional bachata in every class. 'In the Dominican Republic nobody teaches you bachata. Your grandmother shows you. Your uncle pulls you on the dance floor. That's exactly what we recreate at Playtime, that feeling of learning through living it.'

Ninjo Andelloe

FOUNDER · TEACHER

Breakdance, hip-hop, salsa and bachata. Ninjo fuses street culture with traditional partnerwork to teach a grounded, musical lead.  'Your identity is your style. We just help you find it.'

BEFORE YOU START.

Common questions about bachata, Playtime classes and what to expect at your first dance.

WHAT IS BACHATA?

+

Bachata is a partner dance and music genre that originated in the Dominican Republic. What began as the music of everyday people has grown into a global dance culture enjoyed by millions around the world. At its heart, bachata is about rhythm, connection and joy. The music is driven by guitar melodies, percussion and storytelling, while the dance combines simple footwork with playful interaction between partners. Today, there are several styles of bachata, but at Playtime we celebrate its Dominican roots. Our focus is on musicality, social dancing and creating a welcoming community where people connect through music, movement and shared experiences.

WHAT MAKES DOMINICAN BACHATA DIFFERENT FROM BACHATA SENSUAL?

+

Dominican Bachata is the original style of bachata from the Dominican Republic, where the music was born. It is playful, social and deeply connected to the rhythm and instruments, especially the guitar. The dance emphasizes footwork, musical interpretation and the interaction between partners. Bachata Sensual, developed in Spain, is a more recent evolution of the dance. It focuses on body movement, waves, isolations and flowing partner work. The style is often characterized by close connection, dramatic lines and expressive movements through the torso and hips. At Playtime, we celebrate traditional Dominican Bachata and its culture. While dancers of all styles are welcome, our events are rooted in musicality, social connection and the joy of sharing the dance floor together.

DO I NEED A DANCE PARTNER TO JOIN A BACHATA CLASS IN AMSTERDAM?

+

No. You can join every class on your own. We rotate partners during class so everyone dances with everyone.

IS PLAYTIME SUITABLE FOR COMPLETE BEGINNERS?

+

Yes! Our classes are intentionally mixed-level. That's how it works in the Dominican Republic too: everyone learns from everyone. More experienced dancers are not better dancers. They have simply spent more time dancing, improvising, exploring the music and learning through experience. In the spirit of the bachata community, they share that knowledge, passion and love for the dance with those who are earlier in their journey. We believe growth happens together. By dancing with people of different levels, everyone learns, improves and contributes to the community.

WHERE CAN I LEARN TRADITIONAL DOMINICAN BACHATA IN AMSTERDAM?

+

Bachata Playtime is the home of traditional 'Dominican' bachata in Amsterdam. Playtimes classes are held weekly at our playground at Lootsstraat 39, Amsterdam West. We also organize traditional Dominican bachata bootcamps and parties at Fijnhout Theater, Jungle Amsterdam and other partner venues across the city. Check out our event calender to join!

WHAT DO I NEED FOR A PLAYTIME BACHATA CLASS?

+

Comfortable, breathable clothing and shoes with a smooth sole. A small towel and a bottle of water are a welcome addition.
